Untold Quirks of The Crypt:
Hidden Café in London

The Crypt: Hidden Café in London is a fascinating and atmospheric spot tucked away in the city’s historic area. Known for its unique ambiance and delicious, affordable food, it’s a place that offers a memorable dining experience.
Nestled beneath historic churches and ancient buildings, the space features exposed brick walls, rustic wooden furniture, and soft, warm lighting that create a cozy, inviting ambiance. The high vaulted ceilings and stone arches give it an authentic, almost cellar-like feel, transporting visitors to a different era.

However, there are some details that no one usually tells visitors, and that shocked us when we experienced them.

1. It's usually packed, especially in winter: Its welcoming atmosphere attracts many visitors and locals, so finding a spot can be tricky, particularly during peak hours. This caught us by surprise; the crowds were a bit overwhelming, and we didn't stay long before having to leave.
2. It operates as a self-serving diner: It's NOT a restaurant. First, you'll line up and serve yourself the food you choose from the trays. Then, you'll pay at the register before sitting down to enjoy your meal. When you're finished, you must leave the trays and utensils you used on designated shelves to keep the place clean.
3. It can get extremely hot when it's crowded: the cramped space and large number of people cause the temperature to rise, so going outside, where it's cooler, often seems more tempting than staying inside to enjoy the place.
Best of all, right across the street is Trafalgar Square, with its lovely fountains and benches to relax and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the city center.
Despite these quirks, The Crypt remains a unique and charming place to enjoy good food in a singular setting. If you're comfortable in crowded places, you'll probably enjoy it much more than we did.
