Having an International Driver Permit (IDP) is important for several reasons, especially when traveling abroad, here are some of them:
1. Legal Recognition: Many countries require an IDP alongside your national driver’s license to legally drive within their borders. It serves as an official translation of your license, making it easier for local authorities to understand your credentials.
2. Avoiding Penalties: Without an IDP, you may face fines, penalties, or even confiscation of your driver’s license if you are stopped by police or involved in an incident.
3. Ease of Rental Car Arrangements: Car rental companies often require an IDP to process your rental, especially if your license is not in the local language, ensuring a smoother rental experience.
4. Emergency Situations: In case of an accident or emergency, having an IDP can facilitate communication with local authorities, insurance companies, or medical personnel.
5. Travel Convenience: It allows you to explore your destination more freely and comfortably, giving you the flexibility to visit off-the-beaten-path locations at your own pace.

Certain Countries Recognize International Licenses Without Additional Permits. Always check the specific driving regulations of your destination country, as some do not require an IDP for short-term visitors or have simplified requirements.
We have rented vehicles with Expedia, Skyscanner and also directly on site in many cities. Our preferred method is to do it online and ahead of time, to have the time to read carefully all the agreements and conditions. In all our travels, we found that is always best to keep the IDP with us as an additional form of identification.
An International Driver Permit (IDP) may not be necessary in certain situations:
-> Your Country and Destination Have Mutual Recognition: If your national driver’s license is accepted directly in the foreign country without the need for a translation or additional documentation, an IDP might not be required.
-> Your License Is in the Local Language of the Destination Country: For example, if your license is issued in the same language and recognized by the country you’re visiting, an IDP may not be needed.
-> Short-Term Visits in Countries That Do Not Require It: Some countries allow visitors to drive with only their national driver’s license for a limited period, especially if they are tourists and not residents.
-> Traveling as a Passenger or Using Public Transportation: If you’re not planning to drive, an IDP is unnecessary.
