5 Must-See Places in Old Town

Some destinations are best experienced without a strict schedule, and Kotor, Montenegro, is one of them.
During our Mediterranean cruise in August, we had the opportunity to explore this lovely destination.
Surrounded by dramatic mountains and the beautiful waters of the Bay of Kotor, this charming coastal town feels like something straight out of a storybook.
With its narrow cobblestone streets, picturesque squares, historic buildings, and impressive medieval walls, Kotor is a wonderful destination for travelers who enjoy discovering places at their own pace.
If you're planning a visit, here are five places worth including in your own walking tour of Kotor.

1. The Sea Gate — A Beautiful Entrance to Old Town

One of the most recognizable entrances to Kotor's historic center is the Sea Gate.
Built during the Venetian period, this impressive stone gateway welcomes visitors into the heart of the Old Town.
As you pass through its historic entrance, you'll find yourself surrounded by centuries of history and beautiful architecture.

Just inside the historic center, you'll discover one of Kotor's most recognizable landmarks: the Clock Tower.
The square is one of the main gathering places in Kotor and offers a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the city's architecture.

3. Kotor's Charming Streets & Hidden Squares

Kotor's Old Town is filled with narrow cobblestone streets, stone archways, charming cafés, and picturesque squares.
During our visit, we particularly enjoyed wandering through the historic center and appreciating the atmosphere.
Around every corner, there seemed to be another beautiful scene worth photographing.
The Old Town's compact layout makes it enjoyable to explore without following a complicated route.

4. Kotor Cats Museum — Unique Stop for Cat Lovers

Did you know that Kotor is famous for its cats?
As you wander through the charming streets of Kotor's Old Town, you'll probably notice something special: cats seem to be everywhere!
These furry residents have become an unofficial symbol of the city, adding even more personality to its medieval streets.
For cat lovers, one of the most unusual attractions to discover is the Kotor Cats Museum.
It's a fun and unexpected stop that offers something completely different from Kotor's traditional historic landmarks.

5. Kotor's Historic Fortress Walls

One of Kotor's most impressive features is its extensive system of medieval fortifications.
The historic defensive walls surround the Old Town and climb dramatically up the mountainside. These fortifications are an important part of Kotor's identity and contribute to the city's remarkable appearance.
During our visit, we explored the sections accessible from the Old Town rather than taking the steep climb toward the upper fortress.

Our KL STYLE Tips for Walking Around Kotor

Wear comfortable shoes. Kotor's historic streets are paved with stone, and some surfaces may be uneven.
Start early during summer. We visited in August, when the weather was warm. Exploring earlier in the day can make walking more comfortable.
Bring water and sun protection. These are especially important if you plan to spend several hours outdoors.
Allow time for photographs. The combination of historic architecture and mountain scenery creates beautiful photo opportunities.
Keep your cruise schedule in mind. If you're visiting by ship, always allow sufficient time to return before the required all-aboard deadline.

For us, the beauty of Kotor was in its atmosphere. We loved being able to explore independently and experience the destination at our own pace.

This is the kind of travel experience we love sharing with our readers.
