One Day in Bruges: Top 5 Must-See Places

A perfect day in Bruges begins with a morning stroll through its enchanting medieval streets, where history comes alive through stunning architecture, ancient churches, and charming squares.
We arrived around 9 a.m. and began exploring the city, whose picturesque canals invited us to admire the scenery and colorful buildings.
Since we already had our itinerary with all the (15) points of interest we wanted to visit, it was very easy to follow the prepared guide and do everything we had planned. Here we share with you the (5) must-see attractions we loved in Bruges.
1. Lake of Love
According to legend, it was once believed that water nymphs ("minnen" in Dutch) inhabited this area, hence the lake's name. It's considered a romantic spot, renowned for its serene beauty and fairytale atmosphere, with a picturesque canal lined with ancient trees, historic bridges, and waters teeming with swans. We visited the lake as the first stop on our itinerary, when it wasn't yet crowded and it was easy to find a place to sit and relax.

2. Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde
The princely beguinage of Ten Wijngaerde, with its white facades and tranquil convent garden, was founded in 1245. It was once home to the beguines, emancipated laywomen who nevertheless led a pious and celibate life. The peace that emanates from this place makes it well worth a visit.

3. Market Square
The Markt (which means "Market" in Dutch) is the central square of Bruges. It's very easy to get to, as most streets and tourist traffic lead you there. It's located in a huge open-air square, making it easy to stroll around and enjoy the city's atmosphere. If you are like us and like to collect something from each place we visit, this is the place to find the most unique handicrafts and objects in the area.

4. Boniface Bridge (Bonifaciusbrug)
Most travelers agree that this is one of Bruges' must-see spots. However, we discovered that just before crossing the bridge (which appears crowded in the background), there's a breathtaking landscape that invites you not only to admire it, but also to explore it and capture unforgettable moments. This one below is, for example, one of the most unique pictures we have taken in Bruges.

5. Watertoren (Water tower)
The tower is 45 meters high and 12 meters thick, and its medieval appearance blends seamlessly into the cityscape. To see it, you'll have to venture a little outside the city center and follow the canals that run along the city's edge. We decided on our route that we would be at the tower at the beginning of sunset, to see the beautiful colors of the sky and the sun filtering through the trees with the tower in the background.
The plan was totally worth it.

There's so much to see and do in this city that we often think we won't have time to see much in just one day. But we can say that with proper planning, we were not only able to see everything we wanted, but also enjoy some quiet time among its parks and nature.
And all in a single day!
