Getting informed should not only be a priority even before we start planning and booking our trips but, also checking what could prevent our dream vacation from becoming a reality.
A word of advice by experience:
ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK
And this is not only a general information and basic prevention, as it really happened to us.
Keep reading while we tell you our story, so you have a heads up.
1. Where do you plan to go: Domestic or International?
-> Domestic Travel typically requires only a valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID. No passport or additional documentation is usually necessary within the same country. Some regions may require proof of vaccination or other health documentation, depending on local regulations.
-> International travel usually requires a valid passport that is up-to-date and has sufficient validity beyond the travel dates. May also need a visa or travel authorization, depending on the destination country’s entry requirements. Additional documents might include proof of onward travel, hotel reservations, travel insurance, and health documents like vaccination certificates or COVID-19 tests.

2. Are all your documents valid for at least 6 months after your trip?
Make sure to check all dates on your passport, visas, driver licenses, driver permits, insurance documents and credit cards.
All documents must be valid on your travel dates and some months after, in order to be accepted by government authorities while traveling.

3. Is your travel destination in the same language of your documents?
If your documents are in a language different from the local language, it may be harder for authorities, hotel staff, or service providers to understand your information, leading to potential misunderstandings or delays.
Having documents in the local language or a widely understood language (like English) makes it easier to navigate procedures, fill out forms, and seek assistance if needed.

4. Does your trip duration require a special permit or visa?
Check the official government or embassy website of your destination country to understand the specific visa or permit requirements, including documents needed, application procedures, fees, and processing times.
Having all the correct documentation and following the official procedures will help you obtain your visa or permit smoothly, ensuring a stress-free start to your trip.

5. Are your political/religious/social standards different from the ones in effect at the destination place?
Before traveling, learn about the local laws, cultural norms, and social practices related to politics, religion, and social behavior. Understanding these can help you avoid unintentional offenses or legal issues.
Even if your beliefs differ, showing respect for local customs and practices demonstrates cultural sensitivity and helps foster positive interactions with residents and authorities.
By respecting local standards and laws, you can enjoy your trip peacefully while maintaining your personal integrity and ensuring a positive experience abroad.
All these questions, even when we do not think much of them, or very often, can be determinant for our experience while traveling. In some cases, many of them will even ban our trip or make us change plans, routes and activities.
Real-Life Event:
When my husband obtained his second citizenship, we had planned a family trip to Europe for a 10-day Mediterranean cruise, and we had been planning every detail for months. But it was only after his final interview that he was told he couldn't leave the country until his new passport arrived; or, if he did, he wouldn't be allowed to re-enter.
Of course, we panicked, and our entire trip suddenly hinged on the remote possibility of getting his new passport in less than 15 days.
As impossible as it seemed then, we acted quickly and managed to have it ready just the day before our departure for Europe; and even while we call this "MAGIC", we wouldn't wish the stress and anxiety of this situation on anyone.
Us departing 1 day after getting the passport...
...and so happy because magic really exists 🙂
