Exploring Dubrovnik Old Town on Your Own

During our recent Mediterranean cruise, we visited the beautiful city of Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Instead of booking an organized shore excursion, we decided to explore the historic Old Town independently.
Instead of booking an organized shore excursion, we decided to explore the historic Old Town independently.
We wanted to enjoy the atmosphere, admire the architecture, and discover the city at our own pace. After leaving our cruise ship, we took a taxi toward Dubrovnik's historic center. The cost for taxis in the area goes from €25 to €45 and the ride takes about 20 minutes.
Discovering Dubrovnik's Historic Center
Right since the arrival, the lovely view of the sea invited to spend a nice time there. We enjoyed browsing the small shops and market areas throughout the Old Town.
The streets offered plenty of opportunities to explore souvenirs, gifts, and local products.
We loved seeing the different storefronts and discovering little corners of the city.
These moments made our walk feel spontaneous and personal.
For us, exploring a destination is not only about visiting famous attractions.
It's also about experiencing its everyday atmosphere.

Why We Enjoyed Exploring Independently
One of the biggest advantages of visiting Dubrovnik without an organized excursion was flexibility. We could decide how long to spend in each area.
There was no pressure to follow a large group or rush through the streets.
We had time to enjoy the architecture, stop for coffee, and browse the shops.
This slower pace allowed us to appreciate the city.
Of course, guided tours can be valuable for travelers who want detailed historical explanations.
But for our plans that day, exploring independently was exactly what we wanted.

KL STYLE Tips for Visiting Dubrovnik Old Town
If you're planning to explore Dubrovnik during a cruise stop, here are a few tips from our experience.
1. Arrange transportation to the Old Town. We paid €25 for our taxi from the cruise port and €35 to return.
2. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dubrovnik has stone streets and uneven surfaces.
3. Bring water and sun protection. Summer weather can be hot.
4. Leave time for spontaneous discoveries. Small shops and cafés are part of the experience.
5. Check city wall admission. Walking the elevated walls may require a ticket.
6. Keep track of your cruise schedule. Allow plenty of time to return to your ship.
For us, the experience was about more than sightseeing. It was about walking together, enjoying a coffee, exploring local shops, and appreciating the beauty of a historic Croatian city.
