Passo dello Stelvio - Hiking Above the Clouds

The marvel of this place—located at an altitude of 2,757 meters—is not just the breathtaking scenery, but the drastic temperature change we experienced.
We started our tour in Merano, Italy, drove up through the mountains to get to the famous Stelvio Pass.
At one point along the way, my husband handed the navigation system to me so I could give directions while he drove… but things didn't go quite as planned. The map showed a left turn that I missed entirely, and we kept driving along the main road until we spotted a border checkpoint with a sign reading "Welcome to Switzerland."
My husband looked at me in utter confusion and asked, "What are we doing here? Our trip is supposed to be within Italy.... oh well...
I imagine the military officer who greeted us and asked for our documents understood my husband's bewildered expression perfectly as we explained where we had actually intended to go. We were quickly cleared to pass, and we continued on our way—with the route now recalculated by the GPS.
Began our ascent, watching the landscape shift dramatically: from vibrant greens to blues and browns, and finally to the white snowcaps on the mountain peaks.
At the summit of the Stelvio Pass, the temperature clearly reflected the high altitude, and the landscape was vastly different from the plains where we had started that morning. We found a cozy bar-restaurant there and stepped inside to have a coffee and warm up. The weather was perfect to visit and hike, so we really enjoyed it.
This was the first time we deviated from our original route, and—as is the case for so many other travelers—it hasn't been the last. We grow with every journey and learn from every experience. It was a very nice experience overall, and we highly recommend visiting the Stelvio Pass to anyone who likes hiking and adventure!
